DescriptionThe National Treasure seated portrait of Roben Sojo is enshrined in an octagonal shrine at the center of Todaiji Temple's Kaisando. Roben, the temple's first chief administrator, played a major role in Todaiji's foundation. This 92.4 cm wooden portrait dates to the Heian period, around the 10th to 11th century, and is celebrated for its solid physique and powerful sense of presence, making it one of the masterpieces of early Japanese portrait sculpture. Normally kept hidden, it is specially unveiled every December 16 for the Roben memorial service, from around 10:00 after the morning rite until 16:00.
