DescriptionThe Kaidan-dō of Tōdai-ji’s Kaidan-in stands on the site established after the Chinese monk Ganjin brought the formal Buddhist precepts to Japan in 754. On the four corners of the ordination platform stand the National Treasure clay statues of the Four Heavenly Kings—Jikokuten, Zōchōten, Kōmokuten, and Tamonten. Celebrated as masterpieces of Tenpyō-period sculpture, they do not rely on violent motion; their controlled postures and penetrating expressions seem to uphold the order of the sacred space and the discipline of the precepts.
