DescriptionTōdai-ji’s National Treasure Great South Gate was rebuilt by the monk Chōgen in the grand Daibutsuyō style and completed in 1203. Inside stand the National Treasure Kongō Rikishi guardians, Agyō and Ungyō, each nearly 8.4 meters tall. Created in only sixty-nine days by teams led by Unkei, Kaikei, Jōkaku, and Tankei, their fierce expressions and taut bodies embody the realism and power of Kamakura sculpture. They drive away evil and prepare the mind to enter Tōdai-ji’s vast sacred precinct.
