DescriptionTōdai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall enshrines the National Treasure seated Rushana (Vairocana) Buddha, the Great Buddha of Nara, whose figure rises 14.98 meters. The colossal image was cast in 749 and consecrated in a grand ceremony in 752. In the Flower Garland teaching, Rushana Buddha illuminates all existence with the light of wisdom and compassion; engravings on the lotus pedestal depict the interconnected Lotus Treasury World. Monumental in scale yet embracing in presence, the image unites an ancient national undertaking with the prayers of countless individuals.
