DescriptionTōdai-ji’s Hokke-dō, also known as Sangatsu-dō, is the temple’s oldest surviving building. Its principal image is the National Treasure standing Fukūkensaku Kannon, whose three eyes and eight arms express the vow to draw every suffering being to safety with an unfailing lasso. Ten National Treasure sculptures from the Nara period fill the intimate hall, including Brahmā, Indra, the Four Heavenly Kings, the Kongō Rikishi guardians, and the hidden Shūkongōjin. Their close arrangement creates one of the most concentrated and solemn worlds of Tenpyō sculpture.
