DescriptionThe National Treasure standing Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined at the center of Kofukuji Temple's National Treasure Hall. Dating to the Kamakura period, it is made of joined blocks of cypress wood with lacquer, gilding, and crystal eyes, and stands 520.5 cm tall. Formerly the principal image of the temple's dining hall, the monumental statue expresses the Thousand-Armed Kannon's vow to save people through its many arms. Numerous dedicatory objects were placed inside, including a wooden five-element stupa, small Kannon images, sutras, and printed Buddhist images. It is permanently on display in the National Treasure Hall, open 9:00–17:00 with admission until 16:45.
