DescriptionKōfuku-ji’s National Treasure Hall preserves the celebrated National Treasure Ashura, created in 734 as one of the Eight Kinds of Mythological Beings who protect the Buddha and his teaching. Made by the hollow-core dry-lacquer technique, the slender figure has three faces and six arms. Unlike the fierce, muscular warrior normally associated with Ashura, this image bears a youthful, inward-looking expression that seems to hold conflict and uncertainty within. Its unusual humanity is one of the great achievements of Tenpyō sculpture.
