Description

Kōfuku-ji’s Central Golden Hall, reconstructed in 2018 after repeated destruction by fire, enshrines a seated Shaka Nyorai made in 1811. The image is not only the principal icon of the hall but also the principal image of Kōfuku-ji as a whole. Surrounded by Yakuō and Yakujō Bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other sacred figures, Shakyamuni presides over an ordered space that expresses the resilience of a faith restored again and again at the heart of Nara.
