DescriptionKōfuku-ji’s Eastern Golden Hall was first established in 726 by Emperor Shōmu to pray for the recovery of Retired Empress Genshō. The present National Treasure hall, rebuilt in 1415, enshrines a seated Yakushi Nyorai from the Muromachi period, flanked by Hakuhō-period Nikkō and Gakkō Bodhisattvas. The Twelve Heavenly Generals and other guardian figures surround the triad, combining prayers for healing and long life with the vigorous protective power of Kamakura sculpture.
