DescriptionThe National Treasure seated Fukukensaku Kannon Bosatsu is the principal image of Kofukuji Temple's Nanendo Hall. It was created in 1189 during the Kamakura period by the Buddhist sculptor Kokei and his disciples over about fifteen months, using joined-block construction with lacquer and gilding, and stands 336.0 cm tall. The figure has three eyes and eight arms, wears a deerskin over the body, and holds ritual attributes including a lasso. Its massive form and dignified expression preserve elements of earlier Buddhist sculpture. It is normally closed to the public; Nanendo Hall is specially opened only once a year, on October 17 for the Daihannya-kyo Tendokue ceremony.
