Description

The wooden seated Amida Nyorai is enshrined in Jibutsudo Hall at Suo Kokubunji. Dating to the 12th century in the late Heian period, this nationally designated Important Cultural Property is approximately 113 cm tall and made of joined cypress wood with a lacquer-and-gold finish. Downcast, compassionate eyes, a gentle expression, softly sloping shoulders and flowing robe folds show the calm elegance of the Jocho style. Both hands form the jobon-gesho mudra; the halo and pedestal were added in later times. Although Jibutsudo is normally closed, visitors may make prayer beads before this important Buddhist statue during a temple-run activity booked in advance.
