Description

The Four Heavenly Kings stand at the corners of the altar in Suo Kokubunji's main hall, protecting Yakushi Nyorai at its center. Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten and Tamonten are Heian-period statues, each carved from a single piece of cypress and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. All four exceed two meters in height. Wearing armor and trampling demons beneath their feet, their fierce gazes and dynamic poses express their duty to defend Buddhism. Visitors to the hall can see the powerful group together with the principal Yakushi image and its attendants Nikko and Gakko.
