DescriptionKofukuji’s Northern Octagonal Hall enshrines a seated Miroku Nyorai, known as a late masterpiece by Unkei, as its principal image. Miroku is the Buddha of the future, and here is represented not as a Bosatsu but in the fully awakened form of a Nyorai. The calm figure conveys nobility arising from within rather than dramatic movement. Together with the statues of Mujaku and Seshin Bosatsu, it embodies the tension and refined beauty of Kamakura sculpture and is one of Kofukuji’s most profound Buddhist-image spaces.
