Description

This Yakushi Nyorai is the principal image of Kongochoji, Temple No. 26 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, also known locally as the 'West Temple' of Muroto. Temple tradition holds that Kobo Daishi carved it in 807 at the request of Emperor Heizei and founded the temple. Normally housed in a shrine inside the main hall, it has been a concealed image since the temple's foundation, but is unveiled each year from December 31 through January 8. Visitors can see the principal image during this limited period at the pilgrimage site overlooking the sea. It is distinct from the temple's wooden Amida statue designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
