DescriptionThis seated Sho Kannon Bodhisattva, believed to have been made in the late eighth century during the Nara period, is an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It was produced using the ancient hollow dry-lacquer technique, in which layers of hemp cloth and lacquer are applied over a clay model before the clay is removed. The statue is 80.9 cm tall. Its high topknot, youthful and refined face, and finely detailed chest ornaments convey the sophisticated Buddhist sculpture of the ancient capital. The principal image of Ganko-ji is Yakushi Nyorai; this Kannon is a separate treasured image. The original is housed in the temple's storehouse and may be viewed with advance registration on the 8th of each month from 10:30 to 12:00.
