Description

Between the main and Daishi halls at Konsenji, Temple No. 3 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, stands a statue of Kurikara Ryuo. Regarded as a manifestation of Fudo Myoo, it takes the striking form of a dragon coiling around a sword backed by flames. The sword and dragon symbolize cutting through the three poisons of greed, anger and ignorance in Buddhism. Visitors can see the outdoor image at close range. The grounds also contain the Golden Well, traditionally said to have been dug by Kobo Daishi, a vermilion Niomon Gate and a pagoda. Temple tradition says Gyoki founded Konsenji at the request of Emperor Shomu. It remains a familiar stop near the beginning of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
