Description

Hannyaji is said to have been founded to pray for Princess Hannya, who, according to legend, sacrificed herself at sea to save others. Its Kannon Hall enshrines Sho Kannon Bosatsu, regarded as an embodiment of the princess. According to temple tradition, Eji established the temple at the request of Emperor Yomei, and mariners crossing the Obatake Strait long came here to pray. A Kannon Goma fire ritual continues in the hall at 14:00 on the seventh of each month, with the public welcome to take part. The date and sculptor of the image have not been confirmed.
