Description

A pair of wooden Kongorikishi guardians stands on either side of the Niomon Gate at Suo Kokubunji. The open-mouthed Agyo is 348.5 cm high and the closed-mouthed Ungyo is 339.0 cm high, making them imposing figures believed to date to the Muromachi period. Both are designated Tangible Cultural Properties by Hofu City. Their muscular bodies and dramatic poses express their role as protectors of the sacred grounds and welcome visitors approaching the temple. Standing at the gate, they can be worshipped from the grounds without paying for admission to the main hall.
