Description

Nikko and Gakko Bodhisattvas stand on either side of the principal Yakushi Nyorai in Suo Kokubunji's main hall. Both wooden statues date from the Heian period and are carved from single pieces of cypress. Nikko is 180 cm tall and Gakko 179 cm. Unlike the usual mirror-image arrangement of attendant figures, these two have nearly identical poses. Their gentle expressions and graceful forms are especially striking. Both are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan and can be seen together with the principal image during paid admission to the hall.
