Description

A pair of Kongorikishi guardian statues stand on either side of the Niomon Gate of Amidaji, a branch temple of Todaiji founded by Chogen in 1187. Dating to the early Kamakura period, they are attributed to sculptors of the Kaikei school. Carved from joined cypress wood with inset crystal eyes, the open-mouthed Agyo is about 270 cm tall and the closed-mouthed Ungyo about 275 cm. Designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, they can be viewed up close at the gate. Together with the thatched gate, they recall the temple's close ties to the rebuilding of Todaiji.
