Description

Four wooden statues of the Heavenly Kings—Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten, and Tamonten—are displayed in the Kohori Yakushi Repository. All are single-block wooden sculptures from the early Heian period, dating to the 9th century. Together with the Thousand-Armed Kannon, three Eleven-Faced Kannon figures, and Kisshoten, they form the group of ancient images preserved from the former Fukkoji Temple site. All four are National Important Cultural Properties, distinguished by powerful bodies and richly individual expressions. They are normally on public display in the repository.
