Description

The repository at Kohori Yakushi displays a triad consisting of a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai flanked by standing Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu. Kohori Yakushi stands on the site of the former Fukkoji Temple, thought to have been the family temple of the local district-governor clan of Yamagata District. All three figures are single-block wooden sculptures from the early Heian period, dating to the 9th century. The central Yakushi is a large seated image of approximately half-jo-roku scale, with Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu standing on either side. The triad is designated a Important Cultural Property, and the repository displays twelve early-Heian Buddhist images in total.
