Description

Zuigan-ji’s National Treasure Main Hall, completed in 1609 under Date Masamune, enshrines Shō Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) as its principal image. The statue is traditionally said to have been Masamune’s personal devotional icon. Brilliant fusuma paintings and auspicious carved motifs express the splendor of Momoyama culture, while the disciplined layout of the Zen temple gives the building a composed dignity. Within the Buddha Room, Kannon devotion and memorials to generations of the Date family reveal the hall’s solemn religious heart.
