DescriptionZuiganji’s Godaido Hall enshrines statues of the Five Great Myoo. Standing on a small island extending into Matsushima Bay, the hall is a symbolic place where sea and faith meet. The Five Great Myoo are hidden images unveiled once every 33 years, with the next unveiling planned for 2039. Although they cannot ordinarily be seen, the hall itself carries the severity and mystery of Myoo devotion. Amid the familiar tourist scenery of Matsushima, Godaido conveys not only beauty but also a taut atmosphere of prayer.
