Description

The Twenty-Eight Attendant Deities in Sanjusangendo’s main hall are National Treasure guardian figures serving the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The complete group of twenty-eight deities, rooted in ancient Indian religious traditions, is a rare surviving ensemble. Carved in joined blocks of cypress and fitted with crystal-inlaid eyes, the richly individualized figures include Naraenkengo, Karura, Bishamonten, Taishakuten and Ashura. Their vivid expressions, dynamic postures and varied attributes are regarded as masterpieces of Kamakura-period sculpture. Arranged before the rows of Thousand-Armed Kannon, they bring extraordinary tension and vitality to the hall.
