DescriptionEnshrined in the Shodo at the center of the Hojo of Shuon-an Ikkyuji, where Ikkyu Zenji spent his later years, this portrait statue is closely tied to the Zen master himself. Tradition holds that in 1481, the year of Ikkyu’s death, he ordered his senior disciple Bokusai to have the image made, and that his own hair and beard were implanted in it. The life-size wooden portrait is highly realistic and is designated an Important Cultural Property. During regular admission, visitors can encounter a Buddhist portrait sculpture that conveys Ikkyu’s presence with unusual immediacy.
