Description

The hidden principal image of Horinji Temple's Myoken Hall is a standing Myoken Bosatsu thought to date from around the 11th century and sometimes described as the oldest surviving wooden image of Myoken. Myoken personifies the North Star in Buddhist belief. The figure has one face and four arms, holding a scroll and brush as well as the sun and moon, and stands upon a blue dragon. Its expression combines compassion with stern intensity, preserving an important image of Heian-period Myoken devotion. Normally closed to the public, it will be specially opened in the Myoken Hall from November 1 to 8, 2026, from 9:00 to 16:00.
