Description

The Maitreya cliff carving can be viewed across the Uda River from the grounds of Ohnoji Temple. Its creation began in 1207 in the early Kamakura period through a prayer of Retired Emperor Go-Toba, and an eye-opening ceremony was held in 1209. Said to have been modeled on the Maitreya cliff carving at Kasagidera Temple, the figure is incised into a natural rock face and measures about 13.8 meters high, making it one of Japan's largest cliff-carved Buddhist images. It is designated a National Historic Site and can be worshipped from the viewing area within the temple grounds.
