Description

The National Treasure standing Yakushi Nyorai in Toshodaiji Temple's Kondo is positioned to the right of the principal image, the seated Rushana Buddha. Made in the 9th century of the Heian period using a wood-core dry-lacquer technique with lacquer and gilding, it stands 3.36 meters tall. The downcast eyes give the figure a solemn, weighty presence. During repairs in 1972, three old coins were found in the left palm, helping confirm that the statue was completed in the early Heian period. The Kondo is normally open from 8:30 to 17:00, with admission until 16:30.
