DescriptionTōshōdai-ji’s National Treasure Kondō (Golden Hall), built in the late eighth century, preserves the appearance of a major Nara-period sanctuary. At its center sits the National Treasure Rushana Buddha, flanked on the right by a standing Yakushi Nyorai and on the left by a standing Senju Kannon, both also National Treasures. Soft light entering through the lattice windows reveals an ordered and solemn Buddhist world that embodies the discipline and faith transmitted by the monk Ganjin.
