DescriptionToshodaiji’s Kondo enshrines a seated Rushana Buddha as its principal image. Seated at the center of a hall that still preserves the atmosphere of the Tempyo period, the Buddha impresses less through ornament than through a vast, quiet command of the space. A standing Yakushi Nyorai and Thousand-Armed Kannon flank the central image, creating an ordered devotional space fitting a temple that carries on the teachings of Ganjin. It is a place where the purity of an ancient Nara temple meets the enduring weight of Buddhist faith.
