Description

The Important Cultural Property standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is the principal image at the center of Daianji Temple's Main Hall. Carved from a single piece of wood in the Nara period, it stands 190.5 cm tall. Distinctive features include the finely carved ornaments on the chest, the full-bodied form, the soft flow of the sash and lower garment, and the graceful treatment of the heavenly scarf. It is regarded as one of the most elegant surviving sculptures from Nara-period Daianji and remains a focus of prayers for protection from cancer. Normally a hidden image, it will be specially unveiled from October 1 to November 30, 2026.
