DescriptionIn Shinyakushiji Temple's Main Hall, the standing Twelve Heavenly Generals guard the principal seated Yakushi Nyorai from a circular earthen platform. The group consists mainly of 8th-century Nara-period clay statues: eleven are National Treasures, while one is a 1931 replacement. The nearly life-size warrior figures display fierce expressions, with glass eyes and traces of original coloring still visible. Because they guard the twelve directions, they are also worshipped as protectors associated with the twelve zodiac signs. The Main Hall is normally open from 9:00 to 17:00 with no regular closing day.
