DescriptionThis is the statue placed on the right among the two standing Eleven-Faced Kannon images enshrined in the inner sanctuary of Ryozenji Kannon Hall. The 167.5 cm figure is carved from a single piece of hinoki cypress and is dated to the 10th century, in the late Heian period. Its drapery and low, weighty proportions retain elements of earlier Heian sculpture, while the face conveys gentleness rather than force, especially through its outstanding serene smile. It is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Mie Prefecture as an important example in the development of the Japanese-style sculptural tradition. Local guidance lists four annual unveiling dates, so checking in advance is recommended.
