DescriptionThe principal image of Unshinji Temple’s Main Hall is a wooden seated Amida Tathagata. Commissioned through the vow of Daiki Shonin of Kenchuji Temple, it was created in 1863 by Kyoto Buddhist sculptor Yamamoto Mosuke. This jo-roku-class seated image is made by joined-wood construction and finished with gold leaf, and is said to have been modeled on the principal image of Chion-in’s Amida Hall in Kyoto. It was designated a Cultural Property of Nagoya City in 1957 and is counted among the “Three Great Buddhas of Nagoya,” together with the images at Koushoji and Eikokuji. It can normally be viewed from 9:00 to 16:00, although access may be unavailable during temple events.
