DescriptionThe stone seated Shaka Nyorai at Fudo-in in central Funabashi was erected to memorialize fishermen and residents who died in the tsunami of 1746 and is known locally as the Funabashi Daibutsu. After two fishermen's representatives died in prison following a fishing-ground dispute in 1824, they too came to be memorialized here, and the annual Daibutsu memorial rite has continued every February 28 since 1825. During the rite, cooked white rice is piled onto the face and shoulders of the Shaka image, traditionally understood as compensation for the scarcity of food suffered in prison. Funabashi City describes the custom as rare even nationally, and the statue was also selected as an official tourism spot in the city's August 2026 digital stamp rally. The image can normally be viewed in the temple grounds, making this a distinctive site where local history and an ongoing devotional practice are directly tied to the Buddha image itself.
