DescriptionRaifuku-ji's wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai is a Tangible Cultural Property designated by Chiba Prefecture. The 56 cm statue is an unpainted single-block carving of kaya wood. Its broad hair mass and strongly waved hairline show the Song-inspired style fashionable in the late Kamakura period. The left hand holds a medicine jar, while the right faces outward as the Buddha sits cross-legged. An ink inscription inside the chest records that the sculptor Kenko made the image in 1285. It is normally stored out of public view at the Inba Historical Folk Museum, but each July 7 it returns to Raifuku-ji and is unveiled in the Yakushi Hall during the annual Yakushison Daigoma ritual.
