DescriptionThe Great Buddha of Nokogiriyama Nihonji is a seated Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai carved into the mountainside. Its original form was created in 1783 by Ono Jingoro Eirei together with 27 disciples over a period of three years. After severe deterioration caused by weathering, restoration began in 1966 and continued for four years, with the image restored in 1969. Chiba Prefecture’s official tourism site introduces it as Japan’s largest cliff-carved Buddha and one of the principal sights of Nihonji. It remains open to general worship at the Daibutsu Plaza during viewing hours.
