DescriptionThe Hyakushaku Kannon at Nihonji was commissioned to pray for those who died in war, from illness or other wartime hardships, as well as victims of traffic accidents. It was carved into the wall of a former stone quarry over six years beginning in 1960 and completed in 1966. Today it is revered as a principal image protecting the safety of sea, air and land travel. The monumental Kannon, carved directly into the vast rock face, stands in Nihonji’s summit area and is open to general worship during viewing hours.
