Description

The central image in Saifukuji Temple's Kannon Hall is a wooden seated Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva about 90 cm tall, designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Kawaguchi City. The statue contains 99 miniature Kannon figures; together with the central image, these form the “Hundred Kannon.” In addition, 99 later Kannon images are arranged on either side of the central figure in the hall. The central image and the miniature figures inside it are thought to date from around 1690, when the hall was rebuilt, and are regarded as a notable example of early-Edo Nyoirin Kannon sculpture. The grounds also preserve a prefecturally designated three-storied pagoda erected in 1693 by Chiyo-hime, daughter of Tokugawa Iemitsu. The annual August 9 Dai-Goma is associated with the Forty-Six-Thousand-Day merit observance, showing the continuity of the temple's Hundred Kannon devotion.
