Description

The principal image of Hounji, Temple No. 30 of the Chichibu Thirty-Four Kannon Pilgrimage, is Nyoirin Kannon, the wish-fulfilling-wheel form of Avalokiteshvara. Temple tradition says that in 1319 the Zen master Doin of Kencho-ji brought the image from Tang China. A further legend holds that Emperor Xuanzong carved it to pray for the repose of Yang Guifei and that the Buddhist master Amoghavajra performed its consecration. Chichibu City likewise introduces the temple as enshrining a Nyoirin Kannon traditionally attributed to Emperor Xuanzong. Normally hidden, the image is unveiled every April 18 and, in 2026, remains open to worship through November 30 for the once-in-twelve-years Horse-Year Grand Unveiling. Its unusual Yang Guifei legend and clearly established viewing opportunities make it one of the most distinctive principal images on the Chichibu pilgrimage.
