DescriptionThe wooden standing Sho Kannon Bodhisattva in Shinkanji Temple’s Kannon Hall is a late-Heian-period image measuring 103 cm and designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture. Carved from hinoki cypress using the split-and-joined technique, it retains much of its lacquer-and-gold finish and its original pedestal. The serene smiling face, slight turn of the waist and lotus held in the left hand reflect the refined Jocho-style tradition of central Buddhist sculpture. Its pose suggests that it may originally have been made as an attendant in a triad. Normally hidden from view, the statue is unveiled once every twelve years in a Year of the Horse; in 2026 it will be open to worshippers from November 21 to 23.
