Description

Tokurinji is Temple No. 17 of the Musashino Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, and Sayama City officially introduces its Great Stone Kannon as a newer landmark of the temple. According to temple tradition, when Nitta Yoshisada established his headquarters at Iruma River during his 1333 campaign against Kamakura, he enshrined Sho Kannon as a protective Buddha, forming the historical background of the temple’s Kannon devotion. Today the monumental stone Kannon stands outdoors beside the Kannon Hall and can be worshipped during an ordinary visit. Within walking distance of Sayamashi Station, the temple brings together the long history of a Kannon pilgrimage site and the striking presence of a modern large-scale Buddhist image.
