Description

Rinsenji Temple preserves a wooden seated image traditionally identified as Sho Kannon Bodhisattva, an 84.0 cm joined-wood sculpture with gold pigment designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture. An ink inscription dated 1304 survives on the backboard, and a graffito can be seen behind the knees. As a dated late-Kamakura-period sculpture it is especially valuable, and its distinctive facial features and clothing reflect the influence of Song-dynasty art then circulating in the Kanto region. In 2024, following its first restoration in roughly 80 years, the image was unveiled for the first time after restoration. In 2026, an extended unveiling was held from April 10 to 20, 8:00–17:00.
