DescriptionHōryū-ji’s National Treasure Kondō, or Golden Hall, enshrines the National Treasure gilt-bronze Shaka Triad, a defining masterpiece of Asuka-period Buddhist sculpture. Completed in 623 by Tori Busshi, the central Shakyamuni is attended by Yakuō and Yakujō Bodhisattvas. The inscription records that the life-size image was begun in prayer for Prince Shōtoku’s recovery and completed after his death for his rebirth and awakening. Together with Yakushi Nyorai, the Amida Triad, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other sacred figures, it preserves the ordered dignity of Japan’s earliest Buddhist art.
