DescriptionHoryuji’s Kondo houses the Shaka Triad, one of the defining masterpieces of Asuka-period Buddhist sculpture. Shaka Nyorai at the center is flanked by two Bosatsu, forming a strict and refined composition with the nobility appropriate to the heart of an ancient temple. Together with the wall paintings and other Buddhist images in the hall, the triad conveys the immense span of faith preserved by Horyuji. Its solemnity feels like ancient prayer quietly given form.
