Description

The Yumedono, or Hall of Dreams, is the main hall of Hōryū-ji’s Eastern Precinct and enshrines the National Treasure standing Guze Kannon. Carved from a single block of camphor wood and covered with lacquer and gold leaf, the 179-centimeter image is traditionally said to be the same height as Prince Shōtoku. Long preserved as a hidden image, it is now unveiled for limited periods in spring and autumn. Within the octagonal hall built on the site of Shōtoku’s Ikaruga palace, its luminous surface and solemn stillness convey the depth of devotion to the prince.
