DescriptionThe Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined as the principal image of the Kannon Hall at Odakesan Kofukuji Temple in Minamikata, Tome City. Affectionately called “Odake no Kannon-san,” it has long been revered as the 10th temple of the Oshu Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. Temple tradition says Sakanoue no Tamuramaro founded the hall to pray for those who died during his campaigns in the north. The inner sanctuary bears the Date family’s bamboo-and-sparrow crest, and the hidden Eleven-Faced Kannon is enshrined deeper inside. The principal image is unveiled only once every 33 years. The outer walls of the hall preserve colorful carvings based on the Chinese Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars, and together with the hexagonal hall in the grounds, the temple is also known as a sightseeing spot in Tome.
