DescriptionRisshaku-ji’s Great Buddha Hall stands beside the Oku-no-in at the end of the climb through Yamadera. Inside is a golden seated Amida Buddha approximately five meters high, before which memorial services with wooden stupas are performed each day. Reached after the long ascent of 1,015 stone steps from the foot of the mountain, the great image forms a fitting conclusion to the pilgrimage. In the clear air of the summit, Amida’s calm expression transforms physical effort into a quiet encounter with remembrance, reassurance, and prayer.
