DescriptionAt the farthest reaches of Risshakuji, widely known as Yamadera, the Great Buddha Hall stands beside the Okunoin. Inside is a seated Amida Nyorai about 5 meters tall, entirely covered in gold, before which memorial rites with sotoba tablets are conducted every day. After climbing 1,015 stone steps, visitors encounter the great Amida as a fitting culmination of the long pilgrimage. In the clear mountain air, the statue conveys both Amida’s peace and the depth of accumulated prayer.
