Description

Risshaku-ji’s Konpon Chūdō enshrines a hidden Heian-period seated Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), carved from a single block of wood. The principal image is traditionally unveiled only at fifty-year intervals and is otherwise carefully protected within its shrine. The hall, recognized as Japan’s oldest surviving beechwood building, marks the beginning of the stone-step ascent through Yamadera. Inside burns the Inextinguishable Dharma Lamp, said to have been shared from Enryaku-ji, joining prayers for healing with the disciplined spirit of mountain practice.
