Description

On the altar inside Burakuji's Yakushi Hall in the mountains of Otoyo, a seated Yakushi Nyorai occupies the center, flanked by a seated Shaka Nyorai to the left and Amida Nyorai to the right. These three Heian-period Buddhist figures are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan; seven Important Cultural Property statues are enshrined in the hall in total. An inscription dated 1151 inside the Shaka image provides a clue to the hall's construction date. The Yakushi Hall itself is a National Treasure and a rare surviving example of wooden architecture from the Heian period in Shikoku. Viewing the statues inside requires advance booking (9:00–16:00, ¥500), while viewing the building exterior requires no reservation.
