Description

The principal image of Tanemaji, Temple No. 34 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, is a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai with a solid, full-bodied form and dignified expression. It is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. According to temple tradition, craftspeople from Baekje who escaped a storm off Tosa carved it as a prayer for safe voyages, and Kobo Daishi later enshrined it as the principal image; this tradition does not establish its actual maker or date. Revered as the Yakushi of safe childbirth, the temple continues a childbirth prayer ritual involving a ladle with its bottom removed. Normally concealed, the image is unveiled each year on January 1–3 and March 8.
